The Education and Examination by Using Denver Developmental Screening Test-II (DDST-II) in Children with Special Needs (CSN)

Abstract

Background: The Denver Developmental Screening Test-II (DDST-II) is an effective screening tool for identifying developmental delays in children across four main aspects: personal-social, fine motor, gross motor, and language. This activity aims to equip parents with the ability to independently monitor their child's development, increase involvement in early intervention, and support the optimal growth and development of children with special needs (CSN). Objective: To enhance public understanding and awareness, particularly among parents and educators, about the importance of early detection in the development of children with special needs (CSN). Method: This community service activity was conducted at the Physiotherapy Laboratory of Muhammadiyah University Ahmad Dahlan Palembang on January 20, 2025. The participants in this activity were 20 children with special needs (CSN) and their parents, who are part of the Forkesi Foundation. All participants underwent DDST-II screening. Results: The results showed an increase in parental knowledge about child development, from 60% to 88%. Additionally, there was an increase in awareness regarding the importance of routine physiotherapy processes. Conclusion: The activity successfully raised awareness and understanding of child development, particularly for children with special needs (CSN). The DDST-II screening provided initial information on the child's developmental condition and potential interventions.
